Dispatches From The 2015 American Film Market


The 2015 American Film Market closed its 36th edition Wednesday, November 11.

The AFM again was host to a truly global market, with a total of 407 films screenings in more than 30 languages, including 87 world premieres and 242 market premieres. New this year, was attendees were hosted nightly to Carousel Cocktails at sunset on the historic Santa Monica pier, providing a unique and memorable experience to connect and relax at the beach.

Films premieres included performances from Michael Fassbender, Brendan Gleeson, John Travolta, Keanu Reeves, Ethan Hawke, Paul Giamatti, John Leguizamo, John Cleese, Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Julia Stiles, Ray Liotta, Shirley Henderson, Diane Kruger, Emma Watson, Daniel Brühl, Clive Owen and Katie Holmes.

Besides Michael Mann’s 80 million budgeted Ferrari that fired up this year, films that were on the market and on the list were essentially more modestly budgeted films, given their indie origin and the high demand set on TV shows these days.

Spotted at the AFM was South African native actor, Andrew Govender, that had the lead role in the film Free State: “AFM was a great opportunity that allowed us to find a Sales Agent for our feature film Free State. We received positive feedback from the market and ended up finalizing a Distribution deal. It also gave me the opportunity to meet more Producers in LA and discuss possible projects that we would be able to collaborate on”. 

The popular five-day AFM Conference Series showcasing sessions on Financing, Pitching, Production, Marketing and Distribution featured global industry leaders including: featured over 100 industry leaders from all corners of the globe including FilmNation Entertainment CEO Glen Basner; Phoenix Pictures’ Chairman & CEO Mike Medavoy; China Film Co-Production Corporation President Miao Xiaotian; Participant Media CEO David Linde; Bona Film Group COO Jeffery Chan; Mongrel International President Charlotte Mickie; Cinetic Media’s John Sloss; Edinburgh International Film Festival’s Mark Adams; The Orchard’s Paul Davidson; Producer & Agent Cassian Elwes; and Broad Green Pictures’ Steve Nickerson.

In addition, new to this year, all attendees received a one-year subscription to Cinando. Many participants already were benefiting from AFM’s revamped online community, MyAFM, where they can create a profile, promote projects and services, find other participants, set meetings and maintain daily schedules.
